With all the destruction caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria so far this hurricane season, it may seem like the Caribbean is off limits. It’s not. While some islands have been dealt catastrophic blows and it will be some time before commercial flights and cruise ships return, other islands received limited damage or no damage at all.
Don’t give up on taking that Caribbean vacation just yet!
Just make sure you also do your part to help those destinations which will need significant help in rebuilding. Two options for international well-wishers are the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Hurricane Relief Fund and the Dominica Hurricane Maria Relief Fund.
Here are eight countries that are still open for business.
Barbados
Sandy beaches, the UNESCO World Heritage-designated Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison and more restaurants than you can imagine await you. Don’t miss the duty free shopping!
Go for: beach vibes, outdoor activities, heritage tours, culinary and sporting events
St Vincent and the Grenadines
This gorgeous chain of 32 islands is one of the most under-visited in the region but now may be the perfect time to visit. Hop on the ferry from the mainland to Bequia, explore Canouan and Mayreau and enjoy laidback island life.
Go for: eco-adventures, snorkelling and diving, island-hopping
Jamaica
The home of Bob Marley and Usain Bolt has something for everyone. Whether you want to stay on a resort and sip fruity cocktails or get out and explore, Jamaica’s vibrancy is not to be missed.
Go for: nightlife, hiking, river rafting, Red Stripe beer and jerk chicken
Trinidad and Tobago
Carnival season is a popular time of year but you definitely don’t need to wait until then. Plan an active holiday on land and/or sea.
Go for: food, Tobago Cocoa Estate, bird watching, beaches
St Lucia
Hike the world famous Pitons, explore the fountain of youth that’s the Sulphur Springs or view the island via ATV or segway. On the other hand, if you’re in the mood for romance, St Lucia is perfect destination.
Go for: weddings and honeymoons, outdoor adventures, breathtaking views, sunset sails
Grenada
Antigua
Antigua’s small sister island of Barbuda was severely impacted by Hurricane Irma but with less than 100 hotel rooms there, the impact on tourism will be minimal.
St. Kitts & Nevis
St. Kitts is another island that was fortunate to escape major damage from Hurricane Maria. All hotels there are fully operational and properties which usually stay open at this time of year are servicing guests. Enjoy music and food on The Strip, play water sports, go zip lining or learn about the country’s history.
I’ve only been to three of the countries on this list. I can’t wait to explore more of the Caribbean!!
